Welcome Message from the Co-Secretariat of APEDNN

Dear participants,

It is our great pleasure to announce that the Asia-Pacific Emergency and Disaster Nursing Network (APEDNN) Conference will be held in Siem Reap, Kingdom of Cambodia, from 15 to 16 November 2018, at Angkor Paradise Hotel. This Conference will provide a unique regional platform for sharing vision on emergency and disaster nursing, exchanging new ideas, and strengthening collaborations and networks.

In recent years, the focus of disaster management has been shifted from disaster response to capacity and resilience building. The theme of this Conference, “Disaster Capacity and Resilience Building: Nursing Contributions”, is aptly chosen to reflect the latest trend.

This two-day Conference aims to elicit questions and dialogues about disaster capacity and resilience building, and to examine the role and contribution of nurses in disaster-related areas. We will cover a diverse range of topics, from disaster risk assessment and management, disaster preparation in community and healthcare settings, nurses contribution in reducing disaster risks and resilience building, to enhancing disaster resilience and developing effective responses in recovery and rehabilitation stages, etc.

The Conference will bring together leading experts, scholars, health care professionals, representatives from governments and international organisations, and nursing leaders from all over the world to discuss the challenges of capacity and resilience building in face of the complexities and diversities of disasters, the latest research findings and research-based practices, and the direction of future development of emergency and disaster nursing. It also provides a platform for disseminating the latest knowledge, exchanging ideas on best practices and sharing efforts towards capacity and resilience building.

The APEDNN, together with the Ministry of Health, Cambodia as our co-organiser, and the Organising Committee of this Conference look forward to having you joining this Conference and sharing your knowledge, practice, and research finding with us.

Siem Reap is a vibrant city with rich history. For those coming from overseas, we hope you will enjoy your stay in the bustling town of Siem Reap. We are sure that all participants will find the APEDNN Conference extremely rewarding.

For the past few decades, education, research, and practice have made positive impacts on disaster preparation, risk reduction, and the development of disaster capacity and resilience. Nurses' roles are changing and their involvement in disaster nursing and disaster-related areas are increasing.

In recent years, there have been calls from international organisations to place more emphasis on capacity and resilience building of communities. With the theme “Disaster Capacity and Resilience Building: Nursing Contributions”, this Conference is a response to the global development. We aim to deliver you an exciting and comprehensive programme that opens up dialogues about the challenges of capacity and resilience building and disaster-related nursing education, research, and nursing practices.

Our renowned speakers from the region and all over the world will share their latest research findings, research-based practices, education for disaster risk reduction in their countries, and their views on the challenges of capacity and resilience building in community and healthcare settings. Together with the leading experts, representatives from governments and international organisations, and leaders in the field of health care and nursing, we will review nurses role and contribution in disaster-related areas, and explore the global disaster management and disaster nursing development.
