Background

Sigma Theta Tau was founded in 1922 at Indiana University Training School for Nurses, now the Indiana University School of Nursing in the United States. The name Sigma Theta Tau came from the initials of the Greek words Storge, Tharos, and Tima which mean love, courage and honor. The mission of the Society is to foster excellence, scholarship, and leadership in nursing to improve health care. In 1985, the Society became incorporated as Sigma Theta Tau International to support a global community of nursing scholars.



Overview of the Society

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Honor Society of Nursing was established on 8 October 1997. It has successfully chartered to be the first Hong Kong Chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing on March 18, 2000. The founding members who are also the steering members of this former Society are Professor Frances Wong, Dr Shirley Ching, Ms May Ho, Dr Hau-yee Kuan, Dr Claudia Lai, Professor Alice Loke, Dr Marian Wong, Dr Susie Lum, Dr Susanna Chan, and Professor Ida Martinson, who is also the advisor of the Society.

Based on the Strategic Plan 2005 (STTI), Pi Iota Chapter has developed strategic plans that fit into Hong Kong context during the first board of directors meeting held on 27 April, 2000.

The current committee board has reviewed and amended the plan at the third board of directors meeting held on 17 June, 2006, and the followings are the revised strategic directions for the year of 2006-2008.



Goal 1:
Membership Development - Develop members across the span of their careers.

To facilitate exchange between nursing scholars within East Asia region (EAFON);

To join with the alumni to participate in community activities;

Chapter Development - Build strong chapters and foster collaborative leadership.

Global linkages - Advance global linkages at the organizational and member levels.

Pi Iota Chapter Scholarship 2008/09

Objective
The aim of this Pi Iota Chapter scholarship is to recognize academic excellence and outstanding scholastic achievement and community nursing services in the chapter.

Number of Scholarships
There will be 5 scholarship awards for the 2007/08 academic year.

Provision of the Scholarships
Successful candidates will receive an award of HK$1000. The scholarships are tenable for the 2007/08 year only.

Closing Date for Nomination and Application
March 31 2009.
